Review Of The ASUS G73Jw-A1
Best Value For Your Money For A Gaming Laptop

Gaming laptops are generally shunned by the hardcore for being inferior
to their desktop brethren. They're criticized for being under powered
and overly expensive, and generally not suitable for modern games.
Whether or not that is true is a matter of taste though, and the G73JW
packs exception value given the amount of tech built into it. Yes it
can play games, beautifully it can play modern games on generally high
settings at its native 1080p settings. The performance of its nvidia
GTX 460m is comparable to the desktop GTS 450, a very capable
mainstream card. It comes packed with 8GB of RAM and a terrabyte of HD
storage spread over two physical drives. The quad-core and 8-threaded
i7 CPU is no slouch when it comes to any application. The default
1.73GHz clock speed dynamically overclocks itself based on usage and
since most programs are still single-threaded the little turbo boost
monitor often shows it at 2.8GHz with two cores temporarily turned off.
Oh and there is blu-ray. The display is great with excellent colors and backlighting. After using it for the first few hours, I noticed a stuck pixel toward the top stuck on blue. Asus has a great 30 day zero bright dot warranty though and will replace the screen. Based on prior experience with high res displays and Dell, I'd rather not be without a computer for a few days and gamble that the new display is worse. Especially since blue is a color that blends in on just about anything (My previous laptop had on stuck on red and it drove me insane). There is a lot of bloatware to uninstall and no recovery discs (you have to make them) but that's standard in the industry. There is also no native blu-ray playing software for some reason. Keyboard is chiclet style and is also backlit. Sometimes when typing the keys feel 'plasticy' and cheep but I've had no problem in over a month of usage. This is a large laptop but it's perfect as a portable desktop which is what it is for me. The backpack it comes with is great and it fits perfectly, and the mouse isn't cheap looking either. The design might not appeal to everybody looking like it was inspired by a stealth fighter, but the rear 'exhaust' area helps it stay nice and cool and quiet. I'm quite please with it and you will be too
